Mask of Motherhood is the second in a series that was funded by a
Jerome Foundation Grant. The series explores the three phases of womanhood; Maiden, Mother, Crone. I use beads to tell this story.

This story is of a woman in the Mother phase of life.
She has dropped the maiden veil, replacing it with a mask that now reveals her eyes, her soul. A mother tends to be the stability of all those around her (tree trunk). Sometimes she loses parts of herself in that process, (cut off branches). But this is only one of the hats a woman wears. Hopefully she remembers that. If not, when her brood leaves the nest she may not recognize herself under that mask.

This headdress was my first attempt at making a three dimensional base to bead on. After several unsuccessful attempts, I eventually ended up using a wire form that I layered Kunin felt over. The completed form was gessoed then painted with acrylics before the beadwork began. Beading the trunk alone took over 300 hours.
